Unveiling of the Historical Marker held at the Island’s Public Plaza on March 16, 2021

16 March 2021

The people of Suluan, who were known for their kindness and hospitality during Magellan’s arrival in the island, were overwhelmed with happiness and pride, as expressed by their barangay captain, Edgar Loyola, when they saw the parading guests and visitors who witnessed the unveiling of the historical marker held at the island’s Public Plaza on March 16, 2021.

The said event was attended by distinguished guests: Ambassador Jorge Moragas Sanchez (Embassy of Spain), National Defense Under Secretary Reynaldo Mapagu, NHCP Chairman Dr. Rene Escalante, Dr. Ambeth Ocampo (a well-known Filipino historian), Guiuan Town Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan, Guiuan Vice-Mayor Veronica Cabacaba Ramirez together with the Sanggunian Bayan members.

Mayor Gonzales-Kwan was deeply moved that Spain after 500 years had finally sent delegates to recognize the effort of the fishermen back then who helped Ferdinand Magellan in aiding their sick and dying crew and personally showing their gratefulness to the Suluanons for their great kindness.
